Alicante Essentials · Vol. IV – Museums that tell the city’s story
Art, history and curiosities under one roof

Alicante is not only discovered by walking its streets or gazing at the sea. It is also understood by stepping into its museums — spaces that invite you to slow down, observe calmly and connect the loose pieces of the city’s story.
In this fourth volume of Alicante Essentials, we bring together some of the most representative museums to understand Alicante’s past, present and cultural identity. Well-located, accessible places, perfect for combining culture, rest and unhurried walks.
MARQ · Alicante Archaeological Museum
Archaeology that is easy to understand and enjoy
The MARQ is one of Spain’s most highly regarded archaeological museums, and not only because of its collection. Its greatest strength lies in how it tells history: archaeology here is not an accumulation of objects, but a clear narrative that connects eras, people and territory.
From Prehistory to the Modern Age, the museum explains how this corner of the Mediterranean has been inhabited and why Alicante has always been a strategic enclave. Its temporary exhibitions often offer new interpretations and contemporary perspectives on the past.

MACA · Alicante Museum of Contemporary Art
Modern art in the city’s oldest civil building
The MACA is one of those pleasant surprises that works even for those who do not usually consider themselves “museum people”. Located in the Casa de la Asegurada, it combines a historic building with a first-rate contemporary art collection.
Works by Picasso, Miró, Dalí or Juana Francés coexist in a manageable, well-lit space with no sense of overload. It is a museum that can be enjoyed effortlessly, ideal for wandering and discovering unexpected pieces.

MUBAG · Gravina Museum of Fine Arts
Painting and sculpture from the 19th and 20th centuries
The MUBAG offers a more relaxed and local reading of art, focused on artists linked to the province of Alicante between the 19th and 20th centuries. It is not a spectacular museum, but a very coherent one, ideal for understanding the cultural and social context of each era
The Gravina building, facing the sea, adds light and calm, turning the visit into a restful pause within the urban route.

The Ocean Race Museum
Alicante and its relationship with the sea
This museum explains why Alicante is much more than just a city with beaches. Dedicated to round-the-world sailing, it connects maritime history with innovation, sustainability and a spirit of adventure.
It is interactive, visual and accessible, even for visitors with no nautical background. A different kind of museum that adds another layer to the story of the city.

Manlia tip: Perfect if you are travelling with family or looking for a different, hands-on museum experience.
A city that is also explained indoors
Seen together, these museums do not compete with one another: they complement each other. Archaeology explains the origins, contemporary art shows creative evolution, the sea tells the Mediterranean story, and the castle provides context.
Combining cultural visits with walks, gastronomy and rest allows you to experience Alicante with more depth and less rush.
This journey continues. In the next volume of Alicante Essentials, we will dive into Vol. V – Festivals and traditions of Alicante, discovering how the city comes alive throughout the year through its celebrations, customs and local rituals.
If you feel like experiencing Alicante with calm, culture and freedom of schedules, staying in the city centre makes all the difference. From here, all these museums can be explored on foot, adapting the pace to each day.
At Manlia, every stay is designed to enjoy the city from the inside, with carefully designed spaces, a privileged location and the peace of feeling at home.
